Doug Hafer, with Curnutt & Hafer, LLP, and Vicki Hafer, with Vicki Hafer Family Law, have been elected to the Texas Bar Foundation. Foundation nominees are selected based on their outstanding professional achievements and their demonstrated commitment to the improvement of the justice system throughout the state of Texas. Election is a mark of distinction and recognition of their contributions to the legal profession.

Selection as a Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation is restricted to members of the State bar of Texas. Each year one-third of one percent of State Bar members are invited to become Fellows. Once nominees are selected, they must be elected by the Texas Bar Foundation Board of Trustees. Membership has grown from an initial 255 Charter Members in 1965 to more than 9,500 Fellows throughout Texas today.
The Texas Bar Foundation is the largest charitably funded bar foundation in the country. Founded in 1965 by lawyers determined to assist the public and improve the profession of law, the Texas Bar Foundation has maintained its mission of using the financial contributions of its membership to build a strong justice system for all Texans. To date, the Texas Bar Foundation has distributed more than $18 million throughout Texas to assist nonprofit organizations with a wide range of justice-related programs and services. Prayer has always been an integral part of our nation’s history. The Continental Congress in 1775, for example, called for a day of prayer as they began to lay the foundation for what would become the United States of America. Through the years, many other Presidents have encouraged the people of the United States to turn to prayer during troubled times. President Truman, in 1952, went as far as to establish a National Day of Prayer. Since then, every President in office has signed a declaration on the first Thursday of May designating it a day of prayer. Mayor Williams has continued this wonderful tradition in Arlington by establishing the Annual Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast. Curnutt & Hafer is proud to have sponsored this event every year since its inception. For us, as always, today is a great day to be in Arlington.

If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My Face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. – 2 Chronicles 7:14

Today is Election Day for the 2018 midterms. Historically, midterm elections have produced lower voter turnout than Presidential elections, but this year is different. Not only is the hotly contested race between Sen. Ted Cruz and the Democrat Candidate Rep. Beto O’Rourke drawing national attention, but there are several propositions on the ballot that have the potential to greatly affect the City of Arlington.
In this year’s election, the city has proposed a new $189 million bond package, the first since 2014. The package includes proposals for funding to make needed improvements to our residential and commercial streets (Proposition A), enhance several parks throughout the city (Proposition B), improve firefighting and police facilities (Proposition C), and make necessary updates to public administration buildings (Proposition D). All are worthy of support.
Proposition E, which calls for the creation of extreme term limits for the Mayor and City Council members, has been the source of heavy debate for the past several months. Most respected community leaders have encouraged citizens to vote against the extreme term limits. Arlington is the best run city, in the best run state, in the best run country. Let’s keep it that way!
The consequences of this election have the potential to change politics in our city and our state for years to come. Today is Election Day. Let’s get out and vote!

First, the Texarkana Court of Appeals affirmed a ruling obtained by partner Kelly Curnutt dealing with the statutory family allowance in a probate case arising from an inheritance dispute. The ruling effectively doubled the financial result for the firm’s client.
Second, the Texas Supreme Court denied review of a judgment obtained by partner Kelly Curnutt and associate Adam Alexander for the firm’s clients in a wrongful death jury trial in Fort Worth, Texas.
